How do we drink water in the states? : We drink it out of the faucet or the fridge. Here in Africa it's different.
Most
people here drink water out of a faucet but not us Americans. We buy
water in bottles most of the time. When people - including us - are out
and about water bags and coconuts are easiest to get to. "Water bags!? And coconuts!?," you ask?
Water
bags are almost like a Ziplock baggie with out the ziplock. They are
completely sealed plastic bags full of water. To drink it, you bite off a
corner and squeeze the water into your cake hole. Then you throw the
empty sachet on the ground without guilt.
Coconuts
are coconuts...but here they cut them open with a machete, drink the
juice, hand it back to the coconut guy, he cuts it all the way open, and
cuts off a coconut wedge to use as a spoon to scrape out the meat.
Yummm!
Hannah!

Love the pictures, Hannah!
ReplyDeleteJust don't throw the sachet on the ground at school or you will be spending your time cleaning the entire area. I do love coconut water when it comes right out of the coconut!
ReplyDeleteYour mom emailed me all of your blog addresses and I am so excited to live vicariously through you. Have fun and keep up the posts so we can see more of what you and your family are up to.
ReplyDeleteYummy yummy! Can you believed that I've never had coconut water at all, let alone from a coconut?! I might have to buy a coconut and ask for a machete for my birthday like Rockwell so I can try it.
ReplyDeleteHannah, you are hilarious. Can't wait to read more about your adventures over there! Give your mom a hug for me. We miss you guys!
ReplyDeleteMmm mm coconuts! Have you guys hacked one open yourselves with Rock's machete?
ReplyDeleteNo. We don't want to end up in the hospital for part of the time!
DeleteWhen we were in Redlands (near LA) the school milk came in little bags... My students always wanted me to put the straw in the top for them. I got really good at squeezing the bag while I held the top of the straw so that nobody got squirted in the face. Even with my best attempts, someone still got squirted in the eye with milk probably every third bag. I love reading about your adventures... Keep it up.
ReplyDeleteWe just got internet hooked up at our new house and I haven't been able to wait to read your blog! You write so well Hannah! Your humor really comes through and it is just like we are there with you. I will never think of those coconut water samples at Costco the same again. Are you thirsty a lot? How much water do you pack for school? What do you drink besides water?
ReplyDeleteI am just now catching up on reading everyone's blogs. Hannah, thank you so much for saying "cake hole." It made my entire day!
